Smoke screen? I don't think so. Dr. Williams's assertion (copied from a Lester Brown article two years ago) is that 450 pounds of corn can feed a person for a year. Whatever kind of corn it is, do you really think a person can live off it for a year?

Further, the conversion of 450 pounds of corn to ethanol also produces 140 pounds of livestock feed.

Thanks for reading and commenting!

No one is suggesting that people eat No. 2 field corn. You are only throwing up a smoke screen obscuring the real issue by mentioning sweet corn.

People do eat the meat, eggs, and milk that come from the animals that eat No. 2 field corn, and yellow dent is a critical part of the human food pyramid. Despite your spin, turning No. 2 field corn into fuel does have an adverse effect on the price and availability of the food people eat -- just as Walter Williams suggests.

Dr. Williams will admit when he's wrong. He's made mistakes before and he's always owned up to them. I expect he'll do the same in this instance (assuming his "errors" are legitimate).

You had the same thoughts that I did when I read that article, that was just passing on all the common misconceptions about ethanol. I was really surprised to learn that he was a professor. He sure hasn't done his homework on this issue.
