Michigan Governor Supports Anti-Meat Day

Make room for Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm on the funny farm because she must be crazy!

The governor of a state that has a nearly $2.5 billion livestock industry has to be insane to officially ask people not to eat meat – even for a day. Yet that is just what Gov. Granholm has done, jumping on board with the radical vegan groups behind Meatout Day and proclaiming March 20 – National Ag Day, no less – as Michigan Meatout Day. You can call that a direct slap in the face to Michigan’s 21,845 dairy, beef, pork and poultry producers – and the 17,000 corn and soybean growers who help to feed them.

National Meatout Day is sponsored annually by FARM (Farm Animal Rights Movement) and In Defense of Animals (IDA) and backed by other groups like PETA and Mercy for Animals. The Great American Meatout claims to be the “world’s largest and oldest annual grassroots diet education campaign” – which has to be true because it is probably the ONLY one. It is especially galling that this activist campaign chose what has traditionally been a day to celebrate the contributions of American farmers and ranchers to advocate cutting a significant portion of what they produce out of our diets. Their goal with Meatout Day is to encourage people to “kick the meat habit (at least for a day) and explore a wholesome, nonviolent diet of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.” There is nothing wrong with fruits and vegetables and whole grains, but calling them “wholesome and non-violent” makes the obvious implication that meat is unwholesome and violent.

The animal rights wackos are free to do whatever they want to promote their kind of lifestyle – but state and federal government officials have no business doing so. Granholm concludes her resolution thus: “In observance of this day, I encourage the residents of this state to choose not to eat meat. Eating a healthy diet can be fun. Explore the different recipes that can be created by using fresh ingredients and by having a sense of adventure.” Her entire proclamation goes on the assumption that eating meat is bad for you and should not be part of a “healthy” diet. This is not just crazy, it is totally wrong and every one who is involved in agriculture in the state of Michigan should be protesting this proclamation.
